We are recommended for our work in the Court of Protection in Chambers and Partners and in The Legal 500 (Civil Liberties and Human Rights)

(Steel and Shamash) continues to work closely with the Official Solicitor, building on longstanding mental health expertise. Active on deprivation of liberty issues and the interplay of the Mental Capacity Act and the Mental Health Act. (Chambers and Partners 2014)

I really rate this team - they are on some important cases (Chambers and Partners 2014)

The six-strong team is located in London and frequently acts for clients who lack capacity or are minors. Its specialism lies in deprivation of liberty and issues surrounding individuals ability to consent to sexual activity.  The team recently appeared in P and Q v Surrey County Council and Re: P and Q, cases which concern sisters with learning disabilities who were placed in care homes.  The initial judgement and the Court of Appeal both concluded that P and Q were not being deprived of their liberty. (Chambers and Partners 2013)

Steel & Shamash has a strong reputation for its Court of Protection work and its representation of vulnerable individuals. Janice Kaufman and Anna O’Connell are recommended. (The Legal 500 2014)

Steel and Shamash is ‘very strong in this area’, and Janice Kaufman is ‘relentless and clear sighted in defence of those deprived of their fundamental rights… (The Legal 500 2013)

Free legal advice is available and we will always advise you as to your eligibility for legal aid.  We encourage clients to instruct us on a public funding basis whenever it is available.
